Abstract
Backgrounds : Infectious disease is still becoming a worldwide health problem. The high number of Gram-negative bacterial resistance against various antimicrobial push the need for patterns of bacteria and its sensitivity in local institutions, as a guide in the selection of antimicrobial therapy.
Methods : Clinical specimens reeived from Atma Jaya Hospital in 2014. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria was using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion. The antimicrobial susceptibility results processed using the program WHONET 5.6.
Results : During one year periode, there were 204 isolates of Gram-negative bacteria. The most common Gram negative bacteria in order of frequency were Escherichia coli (n = 54), Klebsiella pneumoniae ss. pneumoniae (n = 29), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n = 19), Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 14) and Proteus mirabilis (n = 14). Clinical specimens that yielded the highest growth of Gram-negative bacteria were pus (n = 81), urine (n = 41) and sputum (n = 25). Gram negative bacteria were most sensitive to colistin (74.7%), doripenem (72.1%) and meropenem (69.4%). Gram-negative bacteria were most resistant to oxacillin (98.3%), ampicillin (80.3%) and cefazolin (74.1%). Selection of antimicrobial therapy should consider the data above, the location source of infection and others.
Conclusion : The most common Gram-negative bacteria isolated from Atma Jaya Hospital was Escherichia coli. Sensitivity patterns of antimicrobial therapy were varied, which colistin had the highest sensitivity results against Gram-negative bacteria, followed by carbapenem and piperacillin – tazobactam.
