Isi artikelIn the academic world, traditional definition of literacy as the ability to read and write is not sufficient. Students at the higher education are required to meet the demands of academic requirements, such as accessing and organizing qualified and reliable information and using it for the purpose of academic assignment. This ability is called information literacy. This study is aimed at exploring students’ information literacy to be used as the basis of proposing course designs which will promote the improvement of information literacy. Participants of this study were 120 students of English Education Study Program who were either in 4th, 6th, and 8th semester at the time of the study. The instrument used in this research was Marshall’s Information Competency Assessment which is composed of 40 statements concerning feelings about finding and disseminating research information. The results of this assessment show that in general students in all level (sophomore, junior, and senior) had low information literacy competency (score 4.33 out of 7.00). They particularly had difficulty in identifying the topic, understand ethical, legal and socio-political issues of the information, and evaluate the information. Based on these findings, recommendations were proposed to help develop information literacy and skills and incorporate their delivery in the undergraduate curriculum of English Education.
