Abstract
Background : Alternative medicine has been an important part in community medicine. Frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables give a lot of health benefits. Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench. (also known as okra) is known to have high fiber contents. Study shows great health benefits in high fiber diet on maintaining blood glucose levels in diabetic people. The study is meant to find out whether okra
has effects on lowering blood glucose levels.
Methods : Experimental research with analytic study was done in 12 days using 30 Sprague Dawley rats which were divided 5 groups of 6 rats each: control(1), diabetic control(2), intervention 1(3), intervention 2(4), and intervention 5(3). Each intervention group were diabetic-induced with alloxan and respectively given 100, 150, and 200 mg/kgbodyweight of okra. Blood glucose level tests were conducted before the induction, 7 days after induction, and 5 days after intervention with a glucometer.
Result : Based on the data acquired, reduction of fasting blood glucose levels and 1 hour postprandial blood glucose levels are found in each intervention groups significantly. The p values of each intervention groups’ paired t test results are below 0,05 between pre-intervention day and 5 days after intervention. Blood glucose level reduction are found in rats given 100mg/kgbodyweight of okra. Higher
significance in blood glucose level reductions are found in intervention groups 2 and 3 compared to intervention group 1.
Conclusion : Administering okra shows statistically proven reduction in blood glucose levels on diabetic rats. Administering 100mg/kgbodyweight of okra shows reduction in blood glucose level.
