Abstract
Background.Functional status is an important aspect of self-reliance activities. In the elderly there is a variety of physical and psychological changes that can affect functional status, among which are changes in muscle strength and cognitive function that will ultimately affect one's independence.Hands are the body part most important and widely used in self-reliance activities. Objectives. The aim of this research is to determine the correlation between muscle strength, cognitive function and hands functional status in elderly people. Method.Descriptive-analytic correlative with cross sectional study in 70 subjects in Penjaringan, North Jakarta who are subjects of geriatric research Active (Atma Jaya Cognitive and Aging Research), using Camry Dynamometer, Laffayete Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) as well as questionnaires Mini Mental State examination and Michigan Hands Questionnaire. Results. The average value of grip muscle strength found greater in men (right = 28.7, left = 26.4) than women (16.5 = right, left = 15.7). Hands functional status were found greater in men (97.65) than women (94.3). The average value of cognitive function found greater in men (23.3) than women (21:47), but this difference was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). There is a relationship between muscle strength and cognitive function with age in women (p <0.05), but not in men (p> 0.05). Hands functional status not shown to be associated with age in both men and women (p> 0.05). This study did not reveal any significant correlation between muscle strength and cognitive function in men (p> 0.05). In women significant association was found only on MMT muscle strength and cognitive function (p <0.05). In both sexes not found an association between muscle strength and functional status of the hand (p> 0.05). Conclusions. It was found that with increasing age, the muscle strength and cognitive function will be decreased in women but not in men. Hands functional status not shown to be associated with age. Better cognitive function is associated with greater muscle strength in women but not in men. Better cognitive function is also associated with better hands functional status in women, but not in men. In both sexes, muscle strength was not shown to be associated with the functional status of the hand.
