Background: Skills Laboratory (Skills Lab) instructor play an important role in facilitating and activating a group to ensure that student can achieve a progress significantly in skills training program. This study explores student perception on instructor's role in the teaching learning process at the Skills Lab of Faculty of Medicine Gadjah Mada University (FM GMU). Methods: This research is a cross sectional study using survey questionnaire to all students of regular medical program year 2002 (249 students) and year 2003 (167 students), also secondary data on instructor attendance in July- December 2007. Result: Survey results showed that most of the student give positive perception on instructor in Skills Lab (17 out of 20 statements which had positive response). Two statements had negative response (about instructor's attendance did not on time or on schedule). These problems are possibly related to the controlling system and reward system in the developing countries like Indonesia that is still weak. Innovation can be made by recruiting full timer
