Isi artikel
Globalization, to some extent, has influenced local and national identity. Since its existence, teaching English in Indonesian Primary Schools raises different perspectives in regard to this issue. The quality of learning materials and culture preservations, especially provided in textbooks, has been criticized. Apart from a few available (good) textbook that support Indonesian culture preservation, the present study aimed at finding out (1) what aspects of culture the available textbooks provide, and (2) what contribution of those aspects to the students’ culture preservation. Eight English textbooks written by Indonesian writers ranging from 4-6 grades served as main data, and interviews supported the data collection. The data were analyzed by teaching culture theory proposed by Moran (2001). The study showed the available textbooks list down products of culture. Though the textbooks covered the four language skills in various topics, unfortunately it was found that only few textbooks concerned culture preservation. The products used seem not to help much towards students’ culture preservation. Only few provided a clear review of the materials presented. In some cases, the illustration did not help to bridge learners’ prior knowledge with new learning materials on culture presented. To conclude, the textbooks in use may play a crucial role in developing students’ culture preservation. This can happen when teachers can facilitate their students to comprehend and practise the presented materials; otherwise, this might result in a high complexity or even confusion to students and teachers.
