Abstract
Background. Coffee is a beverage that is consumed by people in Indonesia. Coffee has a high content of antioxidant that gives a lot of benefits especially in reducing the risk of disease. In Indonesia, the most popular types of coffee are Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. The author would like to compare the antioxidant activity between Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee. Aceh’s Arabica coffee was chosen because in terms of production and quality it is the best. About 40% premium coffee beans of total harvest in Indonesia came from Aceh. Lampung’s Robusta coffee was chosen because it is the best coffee in Indonesia in terms of aroma and distinctive taste.
Objectives. The aim of this research is to compare the antioxidant activity between Aceh’s Arabica coffee and Lampung’s Robusta coffee.
Methodology. This is an experimental in vitro research. Measurement of antioxidant activity was done using iodometric titration method. Data analysis was performed
using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solution) version 15.0 for Windows with T-independent test method.
Results. Phytochemicals screening shown that both Aceh’s Arabica coffee and Lampung’s Robusta coffee as samples contains phytochemical compounds such as phenols, alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, and flavonoids. Aceh’s Arabica coffee extract and Lampung’s Robusta coffee extract, each average delta of peroxide values are 0.57 meq/kg and 0.77 meq/kg, the difference was statistically significant with p = 0.013. When compared with the concentration of ascorbic acid, each sample was equivalent to 1.67x10-4 ppm of ascorbic acid and 2.27x10-4 ppm of ascorbic acid.
Conclusions. The antioxidant activity of Lampung’s Robusta coffee extract was higher than Aceh’s Arabica coffee extract.
