Isi artikelBackground: One component in medical competency practice at Skills Lab FK UGM is by using Simulated Patient (SP) to help students to practice and to assess their ability. Simulated patients at FK UGM are taken from non academic staffs from some departments who are willing to act as a patient to help students in learning medical competency. So far, SP evaluation in medical competency at Skills Lab Faculty of Medicine has never been done yet. Objectives: The objectives is to evaluate simulated patient (the ability to playa role as a patient and to give feedback), apprehend the motivation and expectation of the SP's training at Skills Lab Faculty of Medicine, GMU. Method: The sample is last year medical students (year 2003) of the full PBL curriculum (133 students), continued by Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with simulated patients (16 peoples). Results: The result shows that the ability of acting and giving feedback to the students aren't optimum yet, it is shown by some weakness which should be improved. So, we have to realize that the training for SP is very important as approved by the students and simulated patients themselves. Some motivations to be a simulated patient are honorarium, motivation to learn and widen their knowledge about health, help educa¬tional process, to be acquainted with many doctors and for life satisfaction. The SP's recruitment is basically needed considering the number is limited and the work load is overwhelm. An evaluation system is also needed to protect the quality of SP's performance in helping the process of medical competency education in Skills Lab. Conclusions: There are several weaknesses on SP's role in the Skills Lab GMU. SP training is proved very useful to support SP's role for acting and giving feedback to the students. The SPs' motivations and expec¬tations are vary, it has to be considered to reach optimal performance.
