Isi artikel
This study aims at highlighting the challenges and the importance of intercultural communicative competence in Indonesia’s English education. It also tries to suggest a new approach to the development of English intercultural curricula and syllabuses in Indonesia which is expected to reduce or retrench the Indonesian EFL learners’ intercultural incompetence. To answer the research questions, 14 English teachers of Maranatha Christian University were involved to complete a questionnaire and 3 of them were also interviewed to gain more data. The study reveals that the teachers’ challenges of teaching English as the main language of the intercultural communication are the teachers’ moderate intercultural competence, an overcrowded curriculum, and students’ inadequacy exposure and attitude toward English varieties.
