Introduction: Indonesia’s life expectancy has been increasing as the number of elderly and prevalence of dementia. Good screening tool’s needed to detect cognitive impairment in the elderly. As the commonly used Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) affected by several factor such as language, culture, and education, whereas low educational level leads to a higher cognitive impairment, therefore Clock Drawing Test (CDT) has been widely used because it is easier to do, takes shorter time, less biased, but remain sensitive.
Method: This study was conducted with cross sectional descriptive analytic study using data gathered from June to December 2014. Subjects are people aged 60 years or more. MMSE and CDT used as cognitive impairment screening tool.
Result: There are 101 elderly with low education. [1] It was found that there is a relationship between the result of CDT using cut-off= 3 and MMSE in low educational elderly (p= 0,009). [2] CDT gives a high sensitivity and negative predictive value (85,42% and 74,07%).
Conclusion: CDT can be used as a practical and fast screening tool to detect cognitive impairment and early signs of dementia compared to MMSE in low educational elderly, but can’t be used as a diagnostic tool. |
