Abstract
Background: In general, the elderly would experience some neurodegenerative processes, including cognitive functions. One of them may be visuospatial function. Since the decrease of visuospatial function may not appear on the early stage, some additional test to help an early detection may be necessary. Olfactory function test may be used to help to detect the decrease of cognitive function, but never been used to detect the decrease of visuospatial function specifically. Thus research aims to know the association between the decrease of olfactory function and the decrease of visuospatial function in elderly.
Methods: The method used is cross-sectional analytic research method. The total of respondents are 178 persons in Kelurahan Cideng, Jakarta Pusat. The olfactory function tested using “10 familiar smell in elderly” and the visuospatial function tested using an instrument from “Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s
Disease (CERAD)”.
Results:The total of 78 persons (43,82%) belongs to impaired olfactory group and 79 persons (44,38%) experienced the decrease of visuospatial function. This
research showed a significant difference between impaired olfactory group and unimpaired olfactory group to the decrease of visuospatial function in elderly (p =
0.001) with Odds Ratio 9.891.
Conclusion: There is a significant difference between impaired olfactory group and unimpaired olfactory group to the decrease of visuospatial function in. People who experience the impairment of olfactory function possess risk 9.891 folds to experience the decrease of visuospatial function.
