Background : Issue related to the increase of elderly population is agind, this is related to functional capacity of elderly that is maintained by muscle mass and strength which decrease over time. This condition is known as sarcopenia.1,2,3,5 Oneof the factors which play a role in sarcopenia is chronic disease, including diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.8,9The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalension of sarcopenia and its relation to chronic disease in elderly. Methods :This is a cross sectional study involving 190 respondentsa aged 55-97 years. We use Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA), Handgrip, dan Timed-Up-and-Go test (TUG) to assess sarcopenia, fasting blood glucose analysis to assess DM, sphygnomanometer to assess hypertension, and questionnaires to assessthe presence of cardiovascular disease. Data analysis performed using chi square method with p = 0,05. Result : Sarcopenia was positively associated with gender (p = 0,001), yet there were no significant associations between sarcopenia and hypertension (p = 0,152), DM (p = 0,213), and cardiovascular disease (p = 0,470), but there is a significant relationship between hypertension and physical performance (p = 0,012). Conclusion : This study showed a significant association between gender and sarcopenia, nevertheless there were no associations between sacopenia and chronic disease (hypertension, DM, and cardiovascular disease) |
