Abstract
Background. The elderly population growsannually and can increase economic burden. Cognitive function is essential in maintaining quality of life and productivity in the elderly. The declining can be prevented by controlling several contributing factors, including metabolic syndrome and muscle strength.
Objectives. Toexamine the associationsof metabolic syndrome and muscle strength with cognitive function.
Methodology.Adescriptive analytic research and part of ACtive (Atma Jaya Cognitive and Aging Research), with cross-sectional method in 70 subjects aged 60 years and over residing in RW 08, Kelurahan Penjaringan, Pluit, North Jakarta. Glucose, HDL and triglyceride blood test, blood pressure and waist circumference measurements will be taken and categorized by NCEP ATP III to define metabolic
syndrome. Hand grip muscle strength was assessed with Camry Electronic Hand Dynamometer. Cognitive function was assessed with Boston Naming Test.
Results.Prevalence of metabolic syndromeand cognitive impairment prevalence were 42,9% and 37,1%. Mean men’s muscle strength 27.63 kg and 15.77 kg in women. There’s a significant association between muscle strength and cognitive function in women (p=0,026). There’s no significant association between metabolic syndrome and cognitive function (p=0,943).
Conclusions.Women with good muscle strength have a better cognitive function. There’s no significant association between metabolic syndrome with cognitive function.
