Abstract
Background: Dragon fruit contains many chemicals that are healthy for the human body, such as betanin, phyllocactin, and hylocerenin. The peels also contain chemicals suspected as antioxidant. However, these peels are still uncommon to be used, and there are barely enough research for this topic. Therefore, this research aims to know more about the antioxidant activity from the peels of red and white dragon fruits (Hylocereus polyrhizus and (Hylocereus undatus). Mangoosteen peels (Garcinia mangostana) are used as comparison.
Methods: Soxhletation as the method of extraction, and the phytochemical test is qualitative. Antioxidant activity is measured using iodometric titration, and shown by the decrease of peroxide value.
Result: Antioxidant activity are present in all three peels’ extract. Antioxidant activity from red and white dragon fruit’s peels are significantly lower than the peels of mangoosteen (p<0.05). Ethanol (90%) extract of red dragon fruit has higher antioxidant activity (p > 0.05) than the white one.
Conclusion: Dragon fruit peels’ extract has antioxidant activity, although much lower than mangoosteen peels’ extract.
