Abstract
Background: Olfactory function decline is an early sign of cognitive function decline and it can used for early detection of cognitive function decline. Smell identification test is one test that can used to identify the malfunctioning of smell. Smell identification test developed in Indonesia is the use of 10 familiar odorant in elderly.
Methods: This analytical cross sectional study was conducted on September 2014-December 2014 in RW 08 Penjaringan, Pluit, North Jakarta among 109 elderly. Assessment for olfactory function using 6 odorants in elderly, and MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) as the instrument to measure cognitive function.
Objectives: To determine the diagnostic value of smell identification test assessing cognitive function using 6 familiar odorant with cozy aroma.
Results: Percentages of elderly in RW 08 Penjaringan with olfactory function impairment were 14,7% and cognitive impairment are 45%. This study show that there is association between olfactory function with cognitive function (p=0,05) and elderly with olfactory function impairment have 4 times greater risk of having cognitive impairment (OR=4,318), The sensitivity of odor identification test is 91,67% and specificity is 22,45% in assessing cognitive function in elderly.
Conclusion: Olfactory impairment has found to be associated with cognitive function. Elderly with olfactory impairment have four times greater risk of having cognitive impairment. Smell identification with six odorants has a high sensitivity in assessing cognitive function in elderly
