Isi artikelBackground: Overall, in the 15 years since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, the number of cases in the world has fallen by over 99%, from an estimated more than 350 000 cases in 1988 to 1999 reported cases in 2002. The number of polio-infection countries was reduced from 125 to 7. Indonesia, which instituted acute flaccid paralysis surveillance in 1995, requires all cases to be reported immediately to health authorities. Objective: To evaluate the clinical picture of acute flaccid paralysis cases in Dr. Sardjito hospital in 5 year period from 2000 to 2004. Methods: Retrospective study. Children aged younger than 15 years who were admitted to Dr. Sardjito hospital between 2000 and 2004 with acute flaccid paralysis. The history, clinical findings, and epidemiological information, including immunization status and details of any travel should be recorded. Two stool samples from each case subject were collected within 14 days of onset of paralysis for analysis in a WHO accredited laboratory. Results: Acute flaccid paralysis cases in Dr. Sardjito hospital from 2000 - 2004 were 1, 3,1,6,7 (18 cases), aged from 8 month to 13 years and there were 5,5,9,14,13 (46 cases) in Yogyakarta Province. Two adequate stools were collected in 16 patients. None of the cases were classified as acute poliomyelitis or polio compatible. The most common type of acute flaccid paralysis cases in Dr. Sardjito hospital is Guillain-Barre syndrome. Conclusion: Continued high rates of routine vaccination against polio and surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis are still important to reach polio eradication.
