Abstract
Background: The phenomenon of sedentary lifestyles that are often found at this time, causing an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI), as one of the risk factors of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). Premenstrual Syndrome in women causes stress, low self-confidence, and low motivation to work, that can affect their quality of life. This study intends to determine the prevalence of symptoms and degrees of PMS. This study will also analyze the relationship between age of menarche, family history of PMS, and BMI with the degree of PMS.
Methods: The study design is cross-sectional. Research began in Maret 2015 until September 2015. The study was conducted on female medical students of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia batch 2012, 2013, and 2014 that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria as respondents in total amounted to 158 respondents. All the respondents fill in The Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool revised for adolescents (PSST-A). Then the data was analyzed by univariate and bivariate.
Results: Among 158 respondents, there are 48.7% have a moderate-severe degree of PMS, 43.7% have menarche at 12 years old, 29.7% have a family history of PMS, and 58.9% have normal BMI. Chi-square test showed a significant association between the age of menarche and the degree of PMS (P=0.017), and a significant association between family history of PMS and the degree of PMS (P=0.005). Meanwhile, there is no significant difference between BMI with the degree of PMS (P=0.053) according to Mann-Whitney test.
Conclusion: Most of the female medical students are categorized in normal age of menarche and good nutritional status. There is a significant association between age of menarche and family history of PMS with the degree of PMS. There is no significant differences between BMI and the degree of PMS.
