Abstract
Background: When someone gets old, body function will decrease such as sensory
organs, muscle strength, and balance. Balance held a strong affect to the number of
falls. Postural muscle synergies response is one of the factors that will affect
someone’s balance. Upper extremity is one of the factors of postural muscle
synergies response that affect balance.
Method: Correlation analytic with a cross sectional study with 80 subjects,
conducted at Kalianyar, North Jakarta that included in ACtive geriatric research
with questioner and upper extremity muscle strength physical examination using
Push Pull Dynamometer and balance using Berg Balance Scale.
Objective: The aim of this research is to determine the correlation between upper
extremity muscle strength, and balance in elderly people.
Result: The average of upper extremity muscle strength is 35.42. A relationship was
found between gender and upper extremity muscle strength (p=0.00; r= 0.629),
there’s no relationship between age and upper extremity muscle strength (p= 0.464;
r= 0.537). The average of balance is 51.33. There’s no relationship between gender
and balance (p= 0.617; r= 0.251), and there’s no relationship between age and
balance (p= 0.728; r= 0.121). There is a significant relationship between upper
extremity muscle strength and balance in elderly (p= 0.00; r= 0.576).
Conclusion: Upper extremity muscle strength affects balance in elderly.
