Abstract
Background: The role of diet in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is still controversial, including the association between macronutrients in foods and severity of acne vulgaris. In Indonesia, there are still a few researches about this topic. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the association between macronutrients in foods and severity of acne vulgaris.
Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in August-October 2015 among 67 respondents of fourth year pre-clinical students at School of Medicine Atma Jaya. Data related to macronutrients in foods were obtained by using three-days food record. Meanwhile, the acne vulgaris was observed and its severity was assessed by The Global Grading Acne System (GAGS). Data analysis performed using chi-square test with p value= 0,05.
Results: Respondents with low and moderate carbohydrates consumption in their diet show the higher prevalence of mild acne than moderate and severe acne (p= 0,342). Respondents with moderate and high fats consumption in their diet show higher prevalence of mild acne than moderate and severe acne (p= 0,317). Association between protein consumption and severity of acne not analyzed further because all respondents have moderate protein consumption in their diet.
Conclusion: The result shows no significant relationship between macronutrients in foods (carbohydrates and fats) with severity of acne vulgaris (p> 0,05).
