Isi artikelBackground: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the second cause of disability around the world. Pain and disability are the component of clinical gradation in OA. Matrix Metalloprotease-3 (MMP-3) is an enzyme which plays an important role in degradation of cartilage part of joint. It is assumed that level of MMP-3 has a correlation with clinical gradation of OA. Objective: The purpose of the study is to assess the correlation between synovial matrix metalloproteinase levels with clinical gradation of knee OA. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee recruited from Rheumatology Department, RSUP Dr. Sardjito, and Yogyakarta on September-December 2006. Association between synovial matrix metalloproteinase level with Visual Analogue Scale and Lequesne is tested with Fisher's Exact Test and logistic regression. Results and Conclusion: There are 21 subjects that consist of 6 males and 15 females. Multiple Logistic Regression between MMP-3 and VAS is p = 0.157. Fisher's Exact Test between MMP-3 and indeks Lequesne was p = 0.031. Therefore it could be concluded that there is an association between synovial matrix metalloproteinase-3 with clinical severity of knee OA expressed by Lequesne index.
