Background : Acne vulgaris (AV) is one of the most common skin disease with the highest incidence rate compared with the other diseases. One of the factors that causes AV is the increasing production of sebum by sebaceous gland. The menstrual cycle has a strong relationship with the prevalence of AV in women. The fluctuating hormonal during the menstrual cycle has a close connection with the exacerbations of AV because it may stimulate the production of sebum. Methodology : Descriptive cross sectional study. The study was conducted on pre-clinical medical student of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, with total sample of 84 peoples. The data collection was executed by using questionnaire and GAGS scoring system for AV and statistically processed with statistic program. The data analysis included univariate and bivariate analysis by using friedman test with 95% confidence level (a = 0,05) Results : Bivariate analysis shows that the prevalence and severity of AV subjectively with the severity of AV based on GAGS scoring has increased in pre-menstrual phase with 83,3%, 47,6%, and 66,7% (moderate level) at p = 0,000. Conclusion : There is a relationship between the severity of AV with menstrual cycle, and the pre-menstrual phase is the most frequent phase with the increasing severity of AV than the other phases. |
