Background.Acute appendicitis is defined as the inflammation of the appendix vermiformis. Given the prevalence of the diagnosis within the Indonesian territory, it is relevant to compare the accuracy of the tests pertinent to the disorder. Currently, there are two methods to diagnose it: based on signs and symptoms, called the Alvarado Scoring System; or based on signs, symptoms, together with ultrasound results, called the Tzanakis Scoring System Goal. To compare the sensitivity and specificity between Alvarado and Tzanakis Scoring System in the diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis. Method. The comparative study is conducted retrospectively using the medical records of Atma Jaya Hospital of reported cases of acute appendicitis within the period of January 2013-June 2014. Results. The sensitivity and specificity of the Alvarado scoring system is 77.78% and 28.57% respectively; whereas for the Tzanakis Scoring System, it is 91.67% and 28.57% respectively. Conclusion. The Tzanakis scoring system has a higher sensitivity compared with the Alvarado scoring system in accurately diagnosing patients with acute appendicitis. However, for a specificity, both have equal values. Suggestion.Prospective study techniques together with improved accuracy and comprehensiveness of medical records are necessary for this research. |
