Abstract
As the growing demand of international market, business English is important to be learned, especially for those who prepare themselves to enter the working environment. They have to be familiar with the vocabulary and topics used in the world of business. The same goes for Vocational High School students who learn specific English according to their own major throughout their education years. They are expected to be ready working after they graduate in their special field. Therefore, this study is aimed at improving novice business English student’s vocabulary in Tarakanita Vocational High School through the Inferring Strategy.
An action research study was implementedduring the academic year 2013-2014, from May – June 2014. The research participants consisted of 20 10th grade students of TarakanitaVocational High School majoring in officeadministration. The students were considered as low-achievers in English based on their low scores at the school entrance test. The study was conducted to answer the question on the effectiveness of teaching business English vocabulary through the inferring strategy. In conducting this research, the researcher divided the action into two cycles and carried out in four steps namely; planning the action, implementation/action, observation and reflection.
The data of the research were collected by using some techniques. They were qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Observation was the technique for getting qualitative data in the form of fieldnotes. The quantitative data included the written tests taken before and after the cycles were implemented and the questionnaire before the research conducted. The researcher compared the mean scores of each cycle from cycle 1 and cycle 2 and described the questionnaire based on its respond and frequency.
The result of the research shows that inferring strategy can improve students’vocabulary. There was an improvement on the mean score of the test. In the first cycle it was 5.6 and improved to 6.5 in the second cycle.Altough there was a slight improvement between the two tests, there was an improvement on how the students pay attention to the context and how they learn vocabulary confidently and independently. It also improved students’ participation in learning vocabulary.
