Background : Nutrition has an important role in maintaining health. When dietary intake is inadequate, additional nutrients from supplements could fulfill the nutritional needs. Based on the data from NHANES 2007-2010 in USA, in the age group >60 years, the use of supplements was 67%. The data represents the basis on undertaking supplement consumption research in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to determine the percentage of individuals aged 45 years or more who regularly consume supplements and some factors that affect the consumptions. Methods : The study population was individuals aged 45 years or more in a church at Central Jakarta (n = 96). This study used a cross-sectional design and consecutive sample with the use of a questionnaire. SPSS with chi square was utilised to analyse the data. Results : 48 people (50%) of the pre-elderly and elderly respondents are supplement consumers. Factors associated with supplementation (P <0.05) are age, spending, economic status, physical activity, drugs consumption, and consumption intentions. Supplement consumers tend to be in the age of = 60 years, spent more than 19 million rupiah per month. They have a high and rich economic status perception, active physical activity, drug taking behavior, and more intention on supplement consumption. Respondents who have more intention on supplement consumption own health advantages and alternatives gained score higher than those who don’t have the intention of consumption. In addition, respondents who consume supplements own alternatives gained score higher than those who do not consume supplements. Conclusion : The results showed 50% of the respondents within this study is supplement consumers. Pre-elderly and elderly should consult doctors or nutritionists before taking supplements to tackle the risk of supplements. |
