Abstract
Background:
Kyphosis is one of the spine deformities which is commonly found in growing child. Kyphosis is affected by anthropometric factors. This study aims to identify correlation between kyphosis against body height, body weight and body
mass index in children aged 12 – 15 years old.
Methods:
This study was designed using cross-sectional study design. Subjects were junior high school students, which were collected as many as 155 students aged 12 – 15 years old in total. Anthropometric variable were body height, body weight and body mass index (BMI). Body height was measured using staturmeter at Frankfort position. Body weight was measured using manual weighting scale. The body mass index was extracted using standard formula. Kyphosis angle was measured using flexicurve.
Result:
As many as 67 (43,2%) subjects (29 (18,7%) male and 38 (24,5%) female) had kyphosis. The correlation power between body height and thoracic curvature was 0,697 (p=0,061). The correlation power between body weight and thoracic curvature was 0,904 (p=0,029). The correlation power between BMI and thoracic curvature was 0,689 (p=0,015). The correlation power between body height, body weight and BMI against thoracic curvature was 0,402 (p=0,09).
Conclusion:
Kyphosis were more frequent in female than male high school students. There was a strong yet insignificant correlation between body height and thoracic curvature. Strong correlation was found between BMI and thoracic curvature.
Moderate correlation was found between body height, body weight and BMI against kyphosis.
