Abstract
Background: In Indonesia, typhoid fever is highly endemic and causing serious health implication, particularly on children aged 5-15 years old. Salmonella Typhi (the culprit of typhoid fever) is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water. Street foods and drinks which are sold in public places (e.g., school) are often unhygienic and high on risk for the transmission of food- borne or water-borne disease. This study aims to identify the existence of Salmonella Typhi (5. Typhi) on the street foods and drinks sold in front of the elementary schools in Pluit Village, North Jakarta.
Methods: The study was conducted at three elementary schools with nine food samples and eight drink samples sold by 15 different sellers. The samples used must be processed by the sellers and not from industrial production. The isolation of bacteria consists of three steps: non-selective pre-enrichment, selective enrichment, and streaking on the selective medium SS (Salmonella-Shigella) agar. The isolated bacteria were identified using MICROBACT™ Gram-negative Identification System. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is conducted toS. Typhi isolated, Clinical Laboratory of Standard Institutes (CLSI) breakpoints was appplied.
Results: Out of nine food samples and eight drink samples from three different elementary schools which were tested, all gave negative results. Identification was carried out on the suspect colony (i.e., colorless colonies with black centers) and the results varied (e.g., Citrobacter freundii, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter agglomerans, Yersinia enterocolitica). In addition, this study finds that SS agar is not highly selective for Salmonella and Shigella as various bacteria are shown to be able to grow on it.
Conclusion: None of all the nine food samples and eight drink samples sold in front of three elementary schools in Pluit Village, North Jakarta contains S. Typhi.
