Neuropathy is a very common complication in patients with diabetes. The pathogenic mechanism suggests there is a role for potent antioxidants in treating the neuropathy. Several therapeutic approaches have been developed including anti oxidants such as alpha lipoic acid (ALA) to diminish increased oxidative stress. Alpha lipoic acid is a very potent antioxidant. These drugs have been designed to favourably influence the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder. Previous clinical trials showed a benefit of ALA supplementation for improving the symptoms of polyneuropathy in diabetic patients.
