Isi artikel
Strokes lead to death or permanent disabilities for millions of people every year when an interruption of the flow of blood to brain cells deprives them of vital oxygen and nutrients. Deprivation of oxygen and nutrients results in a series of biochemical events, leading eventually to cell death and often devastating functional neurological disturbances. Damaging and dying brain cells are very actively using an internal communications network. Most drugs work by interfering with molecules that play important roles within these networks. Citicoline is an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of the neural cell membrane as a part of internal communication network. Produced endogenously, citicoline serves as a choline donor in the metabolic pathways for biosynthesis of acetylcholine and neuronal membrane phospholipids, chiefly phosphatidylcholine. The principal components of citicoline, choline and cytidine, are readily absorbed in the GI tract and easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Exogenous citicoline, has been researched in animal experiments and human clinical trials that provide evidence of its cholinergic and neuroprotective actions.
