Objective. Hyperthyroidism during pregnancy is relatively uncommon. The major cause of thyrotoxicosis in women of child bearing age is Grave's disease. Very few cases were reported in Indonesian medi¬cal journals. We report our clinical experience of hyper¬thyroidism with pregnancy. Methods. Patient informa¬tion was collected from Jaury Academic Hospital and private clinics, from 1990 to 2008. Hyperthyroidism was diagnosed by clinical find-ings and thyroid function test high titer of FT4. Patients were treated with anti-thy¬roid drugs, and the medica¬tion was stopped during the 8th month of pregnancy. FT4 and TSHs were repeated every 2 months where possi¬ble. Patients were instructed to report if they delivered, to follow the outcome of preg-nancy. Results. During 18 years of researching 322 child bearing aged women with hyperthy¬roidism, pregnancy occurred in 34 women or 10%. From these 34 women only 25 pa¬tients could be followed up until delivery, which gave a total of 42 pregnancies. The outcome: miscarriages were found in 12 pregnancies, 1 congenital malformation, 2 low birth weight infant, 1 pre¬mature, and 2 stillbirths, the rest (24) were normal. Conclusion. Pregnancy in women with hyperthyroidism has an increased risk of com-plications. In this study, large enough at around 34%, hyperthyroidism was mostly found in pregnancies where patients did not receive ad¬equate antithyroid drugs.
