Abstract
Background.Student-centered learning (SCL) is a learning method expected to
improve the students’ academic quality. Several example of SCL are Problem-based
Learning (PBL), Skills Lab (SL), Peer-assisted Learning (PAL), and e-learning.This
study aims to find the correlation between SCL and class performance in the health
profession and medical education through meta-analysis. Secondly, this study aims
to find other aspects within SCL, such as communication skills and time management
through systematic review.
Method.Literatures’ searching was conducted through open source search engines:
BMC open, BMJ Open, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were: primary
articles from peer-reviewed journals which reported the correlation value between
SCL and class performance. Articles should be published within the year of 2000 to
2013. Keywords for meta-analysis are ‘Student centered learning’ and ‘class
performance’ and ‘GPA’; and the synonyms of those keywords. Further searching
was also performed through the bibliography of the articles found for meta-analysis.
Articles for systematic review was searched within the results by selecting cases
related 'communication skills' and 'time management'.
Results. The number of articles for meta-analysis and systematic review were 4 and 9
respectively. The result showed a statistically and practically significant correlation
between SCL and class performance (r = 0,56; CI 95%: 0,48-0,64). Results of
systematic review stated that SCL improved aspects of communication skills.
Conclusion.SCL is effective as one of teaching and learning methods for health
profession and medical students. Not only SCL improved class performance, but it
also improved communication skills. Aspect of time management was not found in
the systematic review.
