Isi artikel
The institution of science has a delicate balancing act to perform in contemporary society. It needs to be sufficiently distant from the general public such that it retains its authority, but it also needs to be sufficiently understood by the general public so that it retains its legitimacy. Peter Broks’s Understanding Popular Science provides us with a comprehensive and well-argued account of how this process takes place, and what its consequences are. Broks argues that it is popular science that is a key agent in connecting the public to the formal sciences, and that this has been the case throughout modernity.
