Isi artikelRules of the Game represents the first academic, book-length study of quiz/game shows. As Hoerschelmann outlines, despite their constant presence in the television schedules, their popularity with audiences (and the resurgence of the genre in the wake of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?), quiz shows have been marginalized in scholarship on popular television. There are a range of historical, cultural and disciplinary reasons for this, although as Hoerschelmann indicates, a key factor is certainly their perceived low cultural value. While soaps, sitcoms and reality TV have all been subject to serious and sustained academic scrutiny, quiz/game shows are still more likely to be dismissed as ‘mere entertainment [and] . . . inconsequential forms of public life’ (p. 1).
