Isi artikelWith the much publicized revelation of the Daily Mirror that 10 Downing Street dissuaded the White House from bombing Al Jazeera headquarters in Doha and some of its offices, Al Jazeera has, once again, found itself at the centre of the public’s attention, being part of the news it reports. Similarly, Al Jazeera has been a renewed subject of interest in academic circles. Over the period of a year or so, four major book-length studies have appeared on this Qatar-based satellite channel: Hugh Miles’s (2005) Al Jazeera: The Inside Story of the Arab News Channel that is Challenging the West, Donatella della Rata’s (2005) Al Jazeera, a collection of essays titled The Al Jazeera Phenomenon: Critical Perspectives on New Arab Media (Zayani, 2005) and Olfa Lamloum’s (2004) Al-Jazira, miroir rebelle et ambigu du monde arabe. Among these, the last mentioned is particularly noteworthy because it addresses not so much what Al Jazeera is all about but why Al Jazeera defies understanding.
