Isi artikelThis is an account of the way that academic studies of media and communication evolved in the course of the 20th century. Paddy Scannell is at pains to stress that it considers communication in terms of media, not vice versa, and he takes as the two key historical moments the development of the sociology of mass communication in the US between the 1930s and the 1950s and the development of media studies as a branch of cultural studies in Britain from the mid-1960s to the end of the 1970s. Underpinning both was the German intellectual tradition of critical social theory, which flourished between the 1930s and the 1990s, and whose best known embodiment is the Frankfurt School.
