In March 2008, Tanya Byron submitted her report to the UK government detailing the promises and challenges offered by the ‘new media’ of Internet and videogame technologies. Less than a month later, Grand Theft Auto IV, developed by Scottish coders Rockstar North, was released, with the controversy it garnered surpassed only by its plethoric sales figures. The technical ability and innovation displayed by UK games developers compare favourably with the US and Japan, yet the industry, the motivations of its producers and consumers – the culture – are widely misunderstood. It is therefore thoroughly heartening to see Dovey and Kennedy use the very British approach of cultural/media studies in their text Game Cultures.
