Savigny argues that ‘political marketing relies upon a notion of participation which assumes that voters take part in the formal mechanisms of elections’. This is fundamentally true of political marketing as a practice; however, it is the marketers and practitioners that make this assumption. It could be argued that politics presumes civic duty, but marketing actually does not. A key function of marketing is to encourage participation within a marketplace, not simply as consumers of essentials but also the latest technology. Perhaps it is politics as a civic duty that needs more marketing, or perhaps politics as an activity needs recasting and rebranding to be made relevant to modern society.
