Isi artikelThe notions of spectatorship and audience have been long debated in cinema, television and performance studies. Recently, discussions on so-called participatory culture, Web 2.0 and social media have focused attention on media users as not merely meaningmakers but as content producers and active participants in the production of culture. Within the arts, performative projects, installations and the use of interactive media technologies have all meant the redefinition of spectatorship – and, at the same time, also that of an artwork as an aesthetic object. Modes of Spectating, a collection of articles edited by Alison Oddey and Christine White, sets out to explore this broad and ambitious field of developments. With a total of 16 essays, the anthology is loosely divided into four parts – ‘Interactive media and youth culture’, ‘Imaginative escape’, ‘Identity and self-conscious spectator’ and ‘The site of spectating’ – that illustrate the diversity of themes and approaches discussed under its general title.
