Abstract
Background:
Dark chocolate is one of the most consumed food worldwide. There has been a lot of research on benefits of dark chocolate consumption especially on health and medical terms. And yet the effect of dark chocolate consumption on verbal working memory is still unknown. Working memory itself is critically important in cognitionand necessary for many cognitive abilities, such as reasoning, language comprehension, planning and spatial processing.
Objective:
Testing the effect of dark chocolate consumption on verbal working memory of Atma Jaya’s faculty of medicine undergraduates.
Methods:
This research was conducted among 60 undergraduates from Atma Jaya’s faculty of medicine who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Samples divided with simple random sampling method into control group (n=30) and intervention group (n=30).The intervention group is given a bar of 100 gram dark chocolate while the control group is given a bar of 100 gram white
chocolate while. The assessment is done using digit span test (DST) before intervention and then one hour and three hour after intervention.
Results:
The subject consist of 34 females(56.7%) and 26 males(43.3%) between 18-22 years of age (mean : 19,6±1,1) which divided into 17 females and 13 males with mean age (19,3±1,0) in intervention group and 17 females and 13 males with mean age (19,8±1,1) in control group. This research found a significant improvement on verbal working memory in intervention group approximately 120
-180 minutes after dark chocolate consumption with mean difference DST backward score comparison between the 3rd hour post intervention with the 1sthour post intervention and baseline test all have (p<0,05).
Conclusions:
Consumption of 100 gram dark chocolate significantly improves verbal working memory which measured by DST backward. The peak improvement noted at two to three hour post dark chocolate consumption.
