Background.Aging is a process that cannot be avoided by everyone. Aging will lead an adult to get to a phase known as the elderly (seniors). The dramatic increase in average life expectancy during the last century led the elderly population continues to increase, including Indonesia. Sarcopenia is a degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass that make the elderly more vulnerable. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its relation to cardiovascular disease and hypertension in private and public nursing homes in Jakarta.
Methodology. This research was carried out by using analytical method with cross sectional study. Samples were taken by simple random sampling amounted to 138 elderly. Data were analyzed by usingChi-Square statistical method witha = 0,05.
Results.Based on the results of the study, several variables showed a meaningful relationship with sarcopenia (P < a); those variables were gender (P = 0,012), hypertension (P = 0,020), and cardiovascular disease (P = 0,042).
Conclusions. There are many factors that can affect the occurrence of sarcopenia. This study showed that sarcopenia mostly occur to elderly above 70 years old, male gender, and lower educational level. Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are risk factors for the occurrence of sarcopenia. |
