Background. Sarcopenia is defined as a decrease of muscle mass and common in the elderly. Sarcopenia is also associated with the involvement of cellular processes that are weakened by decreasing muscle anabolism factors, increased inflammatory factors that impact on the process of muscle catabolism. The occurrence of sarcopenia is associated with a variety of risk factors. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between obesity, diabetes mellitus, gender with sarcopenia in the elderly.
Methodology This study was an analytic study, with a design of cross sectional. A total of 138 simple randomly selected respondents based on criteria inclusion. The collecting of data was conducted by interviewing respondesnts. Diabetes Mellitus was collected by laboratorium test. Respondents were from several nursing homes situated in West Jakarta, which were also simple randomly selected. Data was analized by Chi Square test with p value 0,05.
Results Based on the analysis, there were significant relationship between gender and Sarcopenia with p = 0.012 ( P < a ). Nevertheless, there were not any significant relationship between age, education, physical exercise, smoking, obesity and diabetes mellitus with Sarcopenia.
Conclusions In this study, male was more risky for experiencing Sarcopenia than female. Nevertheless, obesity and diabetes mellitus were not risk factors for Sarcopenia in this study. |
