Abstract
Background. Cerebral Toxoplasmosis is one of the cause of death in people with HIV as an opportunistic infection caused by T. gondii parasite, especially in developing countries. Opportunistic infections are the most common cause of death in people with HIV/AIDS, so a study is therefore needed to determine cerebral toxoplasmosis as a leading cause of death in people with HIV.
Objectives. The aim of this paper is to provide information about the development of cerebral toxoplasmosis as a cause of death in patients with HIV and how the discovery of HAART affects the incidence of cerebral toxoplasmosis in HIV infected people, so a prevention to HIV/AIDS mortality can be further improved.
Methodology. This literature is made using the latest scientific journals which are related to the topic. Then further analysis is done so that a reasonable conclusion can be found.
Results and Conclusions. Cerebral toxoplasmosis is a leading cause of death in people with HIV before the discovery of HAART. After the discovery of HAART, the incidence of cerebral toxoplasmosis has decreased along with the other opportunistic infections due to the suppression of the virus that causes HIV, which is resulting in an enhancement of the immune system in HIV patient who’s receiving HAART.The most common causes of death in people with HIV in the HAART era are malignancies and liver cell failure.
Suggestion.Indonesia is one of the developing country and the use of HAART is still not effective in certain provinces . Although the incidence of cerebral toxoplasmosis globally declined, the preventions should still be done in order to avoid an increase in mortality in patients with HIV with secondary infections.
