Abstract
Background: According to WHO in 2009, hypertension was a primary or contributing cause of death, developed and developing countries. The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia based on the analysis conducted by Riskesdas in 2013, is 25.8%. Keeping in mind that hypertension is a chronic illness that requires a long-term therapy, drug adherence plays a very important role in enhancing the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy. Studies have shown poor adherence in hypertensive patients and causing up to 75% of patients failing to achieve their target blood pressure.
Objective: Understand the association between drug adherence and decrease in blood pressure among hypertensive patients in Atma Jaya Hospital
Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study conducted through analytical observation.
Results: The majority of hypertensive patients in Atma Jaya Hospital showed high adherence (71%). 46 (71%) patients show high level of adherence, 16 (25%) patients show intermediate level of adherence and 3 (45%) patients show low level of adherence. The two-tailed Kolmogorov Smirnov test showed a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0,05). Hence there is an association between drug adherence and decrease in blood pressure among hypertensive patients in Atma Jaya Hospital.
Conclusion: This research shows that there is an association between drug adherence and decrease in blood pressure among hypertensive patients in Atma Jaya Hospital
