Medical awareness and clinical management of seasonal influenza remains limited in Indonesia. As future health workers, nursing students’ knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding influenza and influenza vaccine are important so that patients have better understanding about influenza.

The aim of this study were to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practices of nursing students and to obtain students’ ideas about community intervention models for education regarding influenza and influenza vaccine.
Methods.
Respondents were nursing students from a private nursing institute in Jakarta. A structured interview using questionnaire was conducted towards 119 nursing students who were in their first, second or third year of study. Respondents were selected by random stratified sampling.
Data were analyzed descriptively to asses their knowledge, practice, and attitude about influenza and influenza vaccine. Based on this data, 10 students were chosen for in-depth interviews to explore their opinions and ideas about community intervention models for education regarding
influenza and influenza vaccine.
Results.
All of the nursing students knew at least one influenza symptoms and 76% of them knew that influenza was caused by virus. The majority (81%) of nursing students considered that influenza vaccine was effective, while 47% felt that influenza vaccine could cause influenza. Nursing students had low vaccination rates, there were only 2% of respondents that have received influenza vaccination. For the community intervention models, most of respondents mentioned about counseling, poster, leaflet, and free influenza vaccination.
Conclusion.
Most of nursing students already had the basic knowledge regarding influenza, but not for influenza vaccine because influenza vaccination rates among nursing students was very low. As for the community intervention models, nursing students had many ideas which could be used for improving community’s knowledge, practice, and attitude regarding influenza and influenza vaccine. The study highlights the needs to educate future health workers about influenza and influenza vaccine to improve knowledge, practice and attitudes.
