Abstract
Background: The increase in life expectancy continues to increases elderly population. One of degenerative diseases experienced by many elderly is impaired cognitive function. Physical activity is considered to have a role in preventing or slowing cognitive decline. In Indonesia, physical activity in the elderly, especially women is dominated with housework. This study aimed to determine the relationship of physical activity in the form of housework with cognitive function in elderly women.
Methods: This research used a cross sectional analytic descriptive method with subjects are 65 elderly women aged 60 years and over that live in Kalianyar, West Jakarta and never have education above middle school. Physical activity measured by questionnaire about nine physical activities in the form of housework that Indonesian women usually do and cognitive function assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
Results: Based on the analysis with Chi-Square test, we found a significant relationship between the amount of physical activity and cognitive function (p=0.008; OR=4.622). The types of physical activity that had a significant relationshiop was cooking (p=0.005; OR=7.909), shopping (p=0.014; OR=3.642), and washing dishes (p=0.032; OR=5.220), with just the frequency of cooking and shopping that had a significant relationship (p=0.014 and p=0.006).
Conclusions: Cooking and shopping activity have a relationship with better cognitive function
