Abstract
Background.Life expectancy of Indonesia's population continues to increase and is expected to reach 73.7 years by 2025. Increased life expectancy is associated with aging problems such as a decrease in muscle mass (sarcopenia) and a decrease in bone mass density (osteoporosis). Both of these circumstances together will cause clinical consequences such as bone deformities, impaired mobility, increased the incidence of falls, and even mortality. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between sarcopenia and osteoporosis in the elderly.
Methodology. This study is a descriptive analytic study using cross-sectional design. A total of 103 respondents selected according to the inclusion criteria. Data collected by questionnaires, assessment of sarcopenia (Whole Body Mass, Handgrip, and a Timed Get Up and Go Test), and assessment of osteoporosis (using the Achilles Express Bone Ultrasonometer). Respondents were taken from a nursing home in West and North Jakarta. Data analysis performed using chi-square test with a P value = 0.05.
Results. The result shows that there is a significant relationship between gender and osteoporosis, with a P value = 0.021 (P<0.05). However, there is no significant relationship between sarcopenia and osteoporosis, with a P value = 0.832 (P>0.05).
Conclusion. Research on variable characteristics of respondents (age, gender, education) and sarcopenia in conjunction with osteoporosis showed that gender had a significant association with osteoporosis.
Suggestion.Further research about the relationship and the underlying mechanism between osteoporosis and sarcopeniais still needed.
