Abstract
Background.Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance and deficiency.Balanced diet on T2DM patient required an organized eating pattern by maintainingthe amounts and types of carbohydrate consumed that can be done by measuring the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL).Adlay has been expected has a low GI so that it can be consumed as a snack on T2DM patient. Objective. To find out theIG and GL value of adlay. Method. This is an observasional and cross-sectional study. 10 healthy people were chosen as subjects bypurposive sampling. Each person was asked to fast from 10 pm to 8 am and consume measured food that has 50 g of carbohydrate. Finger capillary blood was collected right before eating and than 30, 60, 90 and 120 min after consumption.GI can be calculated by the ratio of incremental area under the glucose curves of test and reference foods. The GL for each test food was determined from its GI value and carbohydrate content.Result. The result showed that GI and GL of adlay were 78,68% and 26,37.Conclusion. Adlay has high index glycemic and glycemic load.
