Abstract
Background. Parenting in children 6-12 years old (primary school / elementary school) is not fully determined by the rules of parents, but discussed with children, parents as "friends", monitoring (control) is still needed. Research Objectives. Knowing maternal parenting role in primary school children (6-12 years old) with behavioral and emotional problems. Method. This study was cross-sectional from April until August 2014 in SDK I BPK Penabur, Central Jakarta. A total of 154 children of class I-VI are chosen by stratified random sampling. Mothers filled out demographic questionnaire, Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Parenting Questionnaire. Data is collected, analyzed, and processed with SPPS.20. Results. 17 (10.9%) of 155 children with behavioral and emotional problems and the most encountered problem was peer group (12.9%). Maternal parenting on children aged 6-12 years (primary school) with behavioral and emotional issues are mostly type A (Democratic). The results of Fischer's exact test: no significant correlation (p=0,05) between mother parenting with behavioral problems and emotions children 6-12 years (primary school). The results of contingency coefficient test: there is a significant correlation (p <0.05) between the maternal parenting with emotional problems, conduct and peer problems, and there is no significant correlation (p=0,05) between exposure and non exposure parenting to the behavioral and emotional problems of children 6-12 years old (primary school). Conclusion. Maternal parenting contribute to children's emotional and behavioral problems, impacting further on the process of learning and child development. Hence early detection is needed, and emotional behavior problems in elementary school students and parents parenting role, which can be further evaluated or referred for further intervention if necessary.
