Abstract
Hypertension is a cause of cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity worldwide because of uncontrolled blood pressure. One of three adults in the developed and developing countries suffer from hypertension (WHO 2013). Lifestyle interventions are needed to control blood pressure and reduce the use of anti-hypertensive drugs. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is known to have a high content of antioxidants that can be used as an adjuvant therapy in patients with hypertension. Pomegranate lowers blood pressure by inhibit the activity of serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), increase Nitric Oxide (NO), decrease free radical, and increase potassium levels. The method used in this scientific paper is literature study by performing various steps of research such as tracking literature, data extraction, and critical appraisal. Five of seven studies suggest pomegranate has a significant effect on reducing blood pressure. Pomegranate dose used varied from 50-330 mL/day. Side effects of pomegranate are found in the form of allergic reactions in some people. The conclusion of this study is the consumption of pomegranate juice regularly at least 50 mL/day can be used as a safe adjunct therapy in hypertensive patients. However, to see the effectiveness of the pomegranate as prevention and determine the effective dose of pomegranate still require further research.
