Abstract
Cancer is one of the main cause of death in the world. In 2012, cancer causes the death of 8.2 million people. It is estimated that the number of new cancer patients will increase from the previous 14 million people in 2012 to 22 million people in the year 2032. The treatments of cancer consist of conventional therapies (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy), as well as complementary and alternative therapies. Herbal medicine is commonly used by cancer patients, as a complementary or alternative therapy. One of the plants that is being studied extensively about its potential as a cancer therapy is ginger. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has anti-cancer effects on cancer cells, so it may be useful in treating cancer. Matters discussed in this study, include compounds contained in ginger (Zingiber officinale), and the mechanism of action of ginger (Zingiber officinale) against cancer cells. The author concluded that ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a great potential to be used as a cancer therapy. Ginger and its active constituents are cytotoxic to cancer cells, have the ability to supress cancer cell proliferation and to induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
