Abstract
BACKGROUND: Aspergillosis is an infectious disease due to inhalation of Aspergillus spores. The incidence of this fungal infections is pretty high in Indonesia. Azadirachta indica A. Juss or more commonly known as neem plant is a plant that has many bioactive compound, such as antifungal. Standard antifungal drugs are reported to have side effects and toxicity. This serves the basis for the discovery of alternative antifungal drugs that less side effects and toxicity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the activity of neem leaves on Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus).
METHODS: This study was experimental in vitro. A. flavus were obtained from Department of Parasitology and neem leaves powder were obtained from Departement of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine Atma Jaya Catholic University. The used methods were disc diffusion and macrodilution. Experimental groups were divided in 3 concentration i.e 0.5 g/dL; 1.0 g/dL, and 2.0 g/dL. Control groups were consist of drug control (ketokonazol 0.1 g/dL), positif, and negatif control. Disc diffusion and macrodilution were conducted using Saboraud dextrose agar and broth, to measure inhibition zone diameter and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test from software computer.
RESULT: There were not significant differences in inhibition zone diameter (p=1.000) between A. flavus samples exposed to NLM (2.0 g/dL) and the control negatif group. The MIC of NLM against A. flavus is 2.0 g/dL.
CONCLUSIONS: Neem leaves methanol extract has antifungal activity against A. flavus.
